Today, I saw a clip of Daniel Haqiqatjou claiming that Muslims calling upon “Jesus” or a dead Shaykh have not committed Major Shirk that takes them out of Islam, but rather that the action is considered Minor Shirk, which does not take them out of Islam.
He differentiated between the “Muslims” who call upon “Jesus” and the “Christian Kuffār.” He claimed that the former do not believe that “Jesus” is God but are only trying to get closer to Allāh through His prophet, while the latter believe that Jesus is God. (Typing out Daniel’s misguided claim is nauseating.)
With this claim, it is evident that Daniel believes that what takes a person out of Islam is “believing that something other than Allāh is God.” By this sick principle, the Jehovah’s Witness faction of Christians would not be disbelievers because they do not believe that Jesus is God.
Even the people of Jāhiliyyah, whom Allāh declared Kuffār in the Qur’an, would not be, because they did not believe that Lat, Manāt, ‘Uzza, Hubal, Isāf, Nailah, etc., were the Almighty. They believed in the existence of Allāh and even called upon Him at times.
Allāh said regarding the Kuffār of Jāhiliyyah:
﴾وَالَّذِينَ اتَّخَذُوا مِن دُونِهِ أَوْلِيَاءَ مَا نَعْبُدُهُمْ إِلَّا لِيُقَرِّبُونَا إِلَى اللَّهِ زُلْفَى﴿
“And those who take Auliya’ (protectors and helpers) besides Him (say): ‘We worship them only that they may bring us near to Allāh.’” [Zumar:3]
The verse shows that the people Allāh referred to as Kuffār in the Qur’an also acknowledged Allāh as the Almighty and the Greatest, yet they were regarded as taking partners besides Allāh only because they prayed to those idols. This proves that the Shirk for which the Prophet ﷺ actually fought the Kuffār of Quraysh was making du’ā to other than Allāh.
Allāh said:
“Say (O Muhammad ﷺ): Who provides for you from the sky and the earth? Or who owns hearing and sight? And who brings out the living from the dead and brings out the dead from the living? And who disposes the affairs?” “They will say: Allāh. Say: Will you not then be afraid of Allāh’s punishment?”
This verse also shows that the Kuffār regarded Allāh as the Almighty, yet they were referred to as disbelievers because they made du’ā to other than Allāh.
Then a person might say, “Daniel is talking about Muslims who believe in Allāh and the Sharee’ah of the Prophet ﷺ. The Kuffār you are talking about did not believe in the Sharee’ah of Islam at all.” The answer to this doubt is from different angles.
You should know that claiming to believe in Allāh and the Sharee’ah of the Prophet ﷺ does not automatically mean that actions of Kufr would not take them out of Islam.
During the time of the Messenger ﷺ, some people believed in the Sharee’ah of the Prophet ﷺ and even went to battle with him. Yet, when they mocked some of the companions, Allāh declared them Kuffār from above the seventh heaven. One of them even came to excuse himself to the Prophet ﷺ, yet the Prophet ﷺ reaffirmed that he was a Kāfir.
The verse:
﴾لَا تَعْتَذِرُوا قَدْ كَفَرْتُمْ بَعْدَ إِيمَانِكُمْ﴿
“Make no excuse. You have disbelieved after you had believed.” [Tawbah:66]
Shows that they were indeed believers before, and while they still claimed to believe in the Sharee’ah of the Messenger ﷺ, actions of Kufr took them out of Islam. If mocking the Sahābah, which many might not realize is Kufr, took some people out of Islam, what about calling upon other than Allāh, which is the same action as the Kuffār of Jāhiliyyah?
Also, examine the hadith of Abu Wāqid al-Laythī, where some of those who had just accepted Islam asked the Prophet ﷺ for a “Dhāt Anwāt” (a tree for seeking blessings), just as the Kuffār had. The Prophet ﷺ told them that this was the same as those who said:
أَجْعَل لَّنَا إِلَهًا كَمَا لَهُمْ آلِهَةً
“Make for us an ilāh (a god) as they have āliha (gods).”
This shows that accepting the Sharee’ah of Muhammad ﷺ did not make them free from that ruling once the action was the same. Likewise, seeking something from other than Allāh is taking that thing as a “god.”
Examine this also. The Sahābah declared Musaylamah al-Kadhāb and others who claimed to be prophets as Kuffār. They fought them and killed them, all while Musaylamah also acknowledged the Sharee’ah of the Prophet ﷺ. If saying the Shahādah would have saved a person from being a Kāfir after being involved in clear actions of Kufr, it would have saved Musaylamah and those who believed in him from the swords of the Sahābah.
Daniel needs to learn Islam.
These are just a few clarifications that can fit in a WhatsApp status, but you can learn more about this by studying Al-Qawā‘id al-Arba‘ and Kashf ash-Shubuhāt by Shaykhul Islām Muhammad ibn ‘Abdilwahhāb with the explanations of Salafi scholars.
This further stresses the importance of studying Tawhīd and taking it seriously.
