Shaykh Ibn Bāz, may Allāh have mercy upon him, said in the definition of Ar-Riyāʾ:
“Riyāʾ is the maṣdar (source, verbal noun) of [the verb] ‘to show off, and [the one who does it] is a Murāʾī (show-off). And it means that he does deeds for people to see him, he observes Ṣalāh for people to see him, he gives in charity for people to see him.
