Shaykh Ibn Bāz (رحمه اللّٰه):
“What is compulsory for every male and female believer during afflictions is to exercise patience and not to grief. For these are affairs that Allāh has written and decreed. They can’t be helped.
So, what is compulsory during afflictions is to exercise patience and during favours is to show gratitude.
And this is an abode of affliction and trial. Due to this, He—the Majestic and Most High—says:
“Only those who are patient shall receive their rewards in full, without reckoning.” [Az-Zumar: 10]
And He, the Exalted, says:
“And be patient. Surely, Allah is with the patient ones.” [Al-Anfāl: 46]
He also said to His Prophet, may peace and blessings be upon him:
“And be patient (O Muhammad ﷺ), your patience is not but from Allah.” [An-Naḥl: 127]
So, the believer must be afflicted. Sometimes in himself, sometimes in his children, sometimes in his relatives, sometimes in his beloved ones, and sometimes in the Muslims. Patience must be exercised.
And due to this, he [i.e., the Prophet] ﷺ said:
‘Amazing is the affair of the believer! Indeed, all of his affairs are good for him. And no one has that except the believer. If an evil befalls him, he is patient, and that is good for him. And if a good happens to him, he is grateful, and that is good for him.’
That is how the Muslim is; very patient in [times of] affliction and very grateful in the good times.
[Exercising] patience during affliction is for him to withhold his tongue and limbs from what is not befitting, and for his heart to be at rest and calm, and not anxious and worried. This is patience.
