Take heed and follow the guidance from Allah, strive to leave all the transgressions you have been warned against, for indeed, if you are warned against certain sins but you are heedless or arrogant to abandon your evil ways and follow Allah’s guidance, Allah will punish you by making you deviate more, and the more you deviate, the harder it is for you to find your way back to Allah.
Allah said,
“And whosoever turns away (blinds himself) from the remembrance of the Most Beneficent (Allah) (i.e. this Quran and worship of Allah), We appoint for him Shaitan (Satan – devil) to be a Qarin (an intimate companion) to him.”¹
When a devil is appointed to an individual as an intimate companion, it is without an iota of doubt that such a person would come to be worse.
If such a person was from those who used to engage in smaller sins and remains persistent on it after being advised regarding them, a devil will be appointed to him as an intimate companion, one which would keep whispering and luring him to that which is evil until he begins to commit bigger sins due to his refusal to change his ways after being called to order.
O noble brother, accept the truth, accept good admonition, accept correction, and do not mind – in whatever way you are being corrected, it doesn’t sound reasonable that you stand before Allah and you tell Allah you turned away from the path of Allah and became heedless because of the manner you were called, that would be utterly unreasonable, I’m sure you agree too.
As much as you have recognized anything to be the truth, do not – for any reason – be heedless or arrogant, humbly embrace the truth, follow it without hesitation, as being heedless from the path of Allah could bring about Allah turn your heart away from the right path.
Remember, noble brother, that deviation is great retribution for turning away from the truth the first time.
Allah said,
“So when they turned away (from the Path of Allah), Allah turned their hearts away (from the Right Path).”²
Whenever you make an upload on your status, -WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram- either picture or music, or you fell into listening to Innovators and people who are not upright upon the manhaj of the salaf and Allah blessed you to have someone to call you to order, you must follow the right guidance, and try as much as possible to rectify the wrong, delete that which is to be deleted and appreciate the one who called you to order, for they in truth, they want you preserved from the punishment of Allah.
Never should you be prideful, haughty such that you refuse to take heed, be self-conscious, and always strive to avoid falling into the mistake another time. And even when you do, reaffirm your resolve to not get dissuaded a third time.
For verily, deviation begets deviation.
If you turn your heart and eyes away from guidance because you are angry for being corrected in what seems to be a mannerless way, or you are overpowered by your desires, Allah would punish you for that by leaving you alone in your deviation and you increasing you in deviation day by day.
Allah said,
“And We shall turn their hearts and their eyes away (from guidance), as they refused to believe therein for the first time, and We shall leave them in their trespass to wander blindly.”³
Being blinded by love and eloquence that makes it difficult for you to leave that misguided speaker, quit watching that movie, or stop listening to that hip-hop star – even after being cautioned-, is indeed a disease of the heart.
Watching conventional footballs, being involved in Haraam relationships, taking pictures, wearing clothes against the Islamic dress code after knowing that these things are prohibited is nothing but a result of diseases in the heart.
You being heedless, submissive to your whims and desires, and being reluctant to find a cure for the disease in your heart, will only beget you punishments of Allah. He would punish you more by increasing your diseases in your heart and making your soul much more constricted just as He did to the hypocrites whose hearts were diseased, Allah punished them with more disease.
Allah said,
“In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allah has increased their disease.”⁴
If you have never been terrified by anything before, you really should be terrified by this.
You should fear deviation and misguidance for yourself, for misguidance and deviation are far worse than death; death only takes you away from this world, whereas deviation would make your heart constricted in this world and you would also be severely punished in the hereafter.
You would not love that Allah punish you with misguidance and deviation just because of a haram content on your phone that you have been warned about but you refused to take heed.
It is invaluable that you understand that the disease in your heart makes you vulnerable to more attacks from Shaytān, and you are definitely being put to trial by that.
Perhaps you have been warned against the doubts of an innovator or a misguided person but you refuse to heed, do have it at the back of your mind that you are liable to become more vulnerable to more doubts coming from Shaytān.
Perhaps you have been advised against nasty desires of fame, love for leadership and you feel too arrogant to take heed, those diseases in your heart would only make you vulnerable to anything Shaytan throws at you, for Allah said,
“That He (Allah) may make what is thrown in by Shaitan (Satan) a trial for those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy and disbelief) and whose hearts are hardened. And certainly, the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.) are in opposition far-off (from the truth against Allah’s Messenger and the believers).”⁵
We ask Allah to save us from misguidance, deviation, and transgression.
We ask Him to grant those of us engrossed in one sin or the other the strength and might to overcome it.
Indeed the way to become more guided on this path is to fear Allah, whenever your attention is being called to a mistake you made, fear Allah, humble yourself before Allah and amend your ways.
For by Allah, fearing Allah increases one in guidance, Allah said,
“So be afraid of Allah, and Allah teaches you. And Allah is the All-Knower of each and everything.”⁶
Indeed there is no reward for goodness except with goodness, if you fear Allah, strive to attain knowledge and you preserve yourself upon the right path, Allah will certainly increase you in guidance, Allah said,
“And Allah increases in guidance those who walk aright [true believers in the Oneness of Allah who fears Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and loves Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)]. And the righteous good deeds that last, are better with your Lord, for reward and better for the resort.”⁷
We beseech Allah to make us fear him and increase us in guidance.
