What are the matters that motivate one to hold fast to the religion of Allāh and the Sunnah of His Messenger, ﷺ?
Shaykh Muḥammad bn Ṣāliḥ Al-ʿUthaymīn
Matters that motivate one [include], guidance from Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic, “whomsoever Allāh guides, none can misguide.”
Then, reflecting upon and considering what is connected to the obedience of Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic, of deferred and instant rewards.
And considering and reflecting upon what is connected to opposing the order of Allāh and His Messenger—of instant or deferred punishment.
All of these motivate a person to perform the commandments and abandon the prohibitions.
Alongside seeking the assistance of Allāh, the Mighty and Majestic. And avoiding keeping bad company.
For indeed, the Prophet ﷺ cautioned against keeping bad company by likening the bad companion with the blacksmith; and he said: “He either burns your cloth or you get a pungent smell from him.”
And how many a person desired to be upright but remained with corrupt company, hence, failed [to be upright]. And when he distanced himself from them, that became from the reasons of [his] guidance.
