Muslim Apologists have put a lot of Muslims to trial by the ways of their debates. Many times the general Muslims are exposed to dangerous doubts regarding their Religion by the disbelievers who debate them (these apologists). Many from the audience are left unconvinced by the replies of the Muslim apologist and they understand the doubt of the disbelievers more than the clarification offered for such doubt. Moreover, not every doubt of the opposers can be refuted and understood by a lay Muslim.
It should be noted that some disbelievers who engage in debates with these apologists are aware that they will be intellectually bullied, but they participate anyway to promote themselves and gain popularity. Many of them have ulterior motives, seeking to cast doubts in the minds of unsuspecting general Muslims. Some have even sought opportunities to speak ill of Islam and our Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), using the platforms provided by these apologists to cause grief and sow seeds of doubt in the minds of lay Muslims.
This is why Muslim callers need to strictly adhere to the methodology of the Salaf when calling to the path of Allah. They must close the door to reckless debating, controversy, and argumentation. It is noteworthy that what we have learnt Scholars of Sunnah is that the correct methodology of Daʿwah is that the caller to the path of Allah must possess knowledge, as Allah said:
﴾قُلْ هَٰذِهِۦ سَبِيلِىٓ أَدْعُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِۚ عَلَىٰ بَصِيرَةٍ أَنَا۠ وَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَنِىۖ وَسُبْحَٰنَ ٱللَّهِ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ مِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ﴿
“Say (O Muhammad ﷺ): ‘This is my way; I invite unto Allah (i.e. to the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism)’) with sure knowledge, I and whosoever follows me (also must invite others to Allah i.e. to the Oneness of Allah- Islamic Monotheism) with sure knowledge. And Glorified and Exalted be Allah (above all that they associate as partners with Him). And I am not of the Mushrikun (polytheists, pagans, idolaters and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah; those who worship others along with Allah or set up rivals or partners to Allah).” [Yusuf: 108]
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Muʿādh ibn Jabal to Yemen, he first taught him the methodology of giving Daʿwah; and from this, Scholars of Islam derived that a caller to Islam must have the knowledge of what he calls to.
But we have seen the methodology of Ahmed Deedat while he is from those who give Daʿwah without knowledge and from those whose ignorance lead them often to call people to a worse kufr (disbelief) than Christianity (from one part of Jahannam to another part of it) and corrupt the beliefs of those are basically Muslims.
Through his lectures, debates, and teachings, Ahmed Deedat promoted several deviations, and I will mention a few for which I have evidence.
1. Ahmed Deedat claims that Allah is not able to do all things. Ahmed Deedat said:
He says: “There is nothing that He can’t do”. I say: “NO! NO! NO! There are things that even Allãh can’t do, God can’t do. And now he is flabbergasted because now he wants to accept the statement that He can do anything and if he wants he can’t do.”
I say: “NO! There are things HE CAN’T DO! Even Allãh is restricted. He can do things. Anything. For example, I say -look- He can’t make another God. Can He?” (audience applauded).
Observe the level of ignorance and audacity of Ahmed Deedat. Note how he boasted of preventing a servant of Allah from believing in what his Lord said, that He is capable of all things.
(Allah mentioned this in up to 35 verses of the Qurʾān).
What kind of Daʿwah is it that one gives whilst believing Allah is restricted in His actions?
The senior Muslim scholar, Shaykh Saalih bin Fawzaan al-Fawzaan (may Allah preserve him), was asked: “There is a famous preacher whose work reaches all over the world. He claims that Allah is not able to do all things and even says he knows of a thousand things which Allah, the Most High, cannot do. Is this (person considered) a caller at the gates of Hell? Must we warn against him?”
The Shaykh replied: “This (person) is a mulhid (deviant), the one who says these things is a mulhid (deviant) regarding the Names and Attributes of Allah.”
“And to Allah belong the most beautiful Names, so call upon Him using them. Abandon those who commit ilhaad (deviate) regarding His Names. They shall be recompensed for what they do.” [Al-A’raf:180]
“Verily, those who commit ilhaad regarding Our aayaat (verses, signs) are not hidden from Us. Is the one cast into the Fire better than one who attains safety on the Day of Judgment?” [Fussilat:40]
Someone says that Allah is not able to do all things… Exalted be Allah! Allah says:
“And Allah is able to do all things.” [Al-Baqarah:284]
How many Verses have [what means]: “And Allah is able to do all things,” or, “Verily Allah is able to do all things”? How many Verses!?
Allah has not mentioned any limit to His Divine Ability, (He has) unrestricted Capability, over all things. (He is) able to do all things. He is Knowledgeable of all things. He, the Exalted and Most High, has not mentioned any limits. And you come and limit this?!
Would you say, “No, there are some things that Allah does not know, and I know them!” This is a type of ilhaad regarding the Names and Attributes of Allah. It is not (the reality) that every preacher is upon the truth.
Listen to the speech of the Messenger:
دعاة على أبواب جهنم
“Callers at the gates of Hell…” It is not that every preacher is upon truth. [End of Shaykh al-Fawzaan’s words]¹
What disturbs is that Mr. Deedat was not only ignorant, but was always amazed with his ignorance that he would reject knowledge-based statements of the scholars when they do not go in line with his intellect.
He narrated this about his meeting with Shaykh Al-‘Allamah Ibn ‘Uthaymīn that he requested an explanation of a particular verse from the Shaykh (he asked the question through an interpreter because he didn’t understand Arabic) but he rejected the Shaykh’s explanation and he gave him his own. (Even though Mr. Deedat didn’t understand Arabic and didn’t study Islam).
2. He denied that the Sun moves and that it will rise from the west at the end time.
Mr. Deedat said: We have a (Prophetic) tradition that towards the end of time, the sun will rise from the West. But how do we understand it? The sun that we know doesn’t rise in the East and it doesn’t set in the West. It’s an illusion that has been created. We know that the Earth is rotating on its axis, and while it’s rotating, it’s giving an impression that the sun is rising and the sun is setting. The sun doesn’t rise and the sun doesn’t set. It’s an illusion that has been created by the rotation of the Earth on its axis.
So, if the sun is to rise from the West (as in the hadith), the way we see it, then the Earth must come to a standstill and go into reverse gear. That’s the only way it can rise from the West. Standstill, it’s moving at a thousand miles an hour at the moment, and it’s gonna come to a standstill and apply brakes and then turn the other way. You won’t be here to see these sights. You won’t see them. Wallahi! Everything will be washed away into the oceans. Once Allah applies the brakes², the ocean will flow, and there won’t be anything. At the highest speed, they will all wash away. So, where is the fun of the sun rising in the West?
I say: No, it’s the sun of Islam, the knowledge of Islam, the knowledge of God will rise from the West.
I say: Mr. Deedat, in this short statement, has uttered at least 4 great deviations that can take a person out of Islam:
1. Claiming that the sun is stationary and doesn’t move.
2. Saying the Earth moves.
3. Distorting the Hadith of the Messenger ﷺ.
4. Denying the belief that the Sun will rise from the West as part of the signs of the last hour.
Taking it from the first point that he claims that the sun is stationary, Shaykh Abu ‘Iyād Amjad Rafīq in his article, “Qurʾānic Evidences For the Motion of the Sun Being Responsible for the Phenomena of Night and Day” brought 22 evidences from the Qurʾān proving the motion of the Sun. Whoever says otherwise has belied the Word of Allah.
The Shaykh wrote: Here are the numerous evidences extracted by Shaykh Hamūd al-Tuwayjurī from the Qurʾān on the basis of which Muslims held consensus that the sun is in motion. Whoever denies the motion of the sun, which is related to the phenomena of night and day, and claims, as do the astrologer-astronomers, that the sun is stationary [relative to the earth] has fallen into major kufr because it is clear takdhīb of Allah – which is accusing Allah of lying and speaking untruth.
1. The statement of Allah the Exalted:
﴾وَالشَّمْسُ تَجْرِى مُسْتَقَرُ لهَا ذلكَ تقْدِيرُ الْعَزِيزِ الْعَلِيمِ﴿
“And the sun runs on its fixed course for a term (appointed). That is the Decree of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing.” (36:38).
And Ibn Mas’üd read the verse لا مستقر لها and al-Baghawī said, in explanation of this statement: “There is no settlement or stopping, it runs continuously.” ³
Al- Qurtubī said: “It runs through the night and day, it does not pause or settle.” This verse establishes جريان for the sun, which is swift motion.
2. The statement of Allah the Exalted:
﴾وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَۖ كُلٌّ يَجْرِى لِأَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّىۚ﴿
“He has subjected the sun and the moon (to continue going round), each running (its course) for a term appointed.” (13:2). [Refer to the aforementioned article for the rest of the evidences]
In the same article, Shaykh Abu ‘lyād Amjad Rafiq cited the statements of Scholars to nullify the claims of those who say the Sun is stationary and I see that those statements also explain the second false claim in the statement of Mr. Deedat that the Earth is in motion, he (Shaykh Abū ʿIyād) cited:
Shaykh Şalih al-Fawzān said: “There is no doubt with us or with the Believers regarding that, that the Earth is stationary and that the Sun orbits around it, as do the stars and the other celestial bodies (aflāk), that they orbit the Earth. There is no doubt about this. This is what is evidenced in the Qur’an and the Sunnah.”⁴
Shaykh Muqbil bin Hadi رحمه الله said: “As for the question of] whether the Earth is in motion, this is an affair for which neither the Book nor the Sunnah have brought [evidence]. Rather, the one who speaks with it is closer to disbelief because he ascribed [something to] Allah without knowledge and also he rejected what is observed…” [End of quote]⁵
Regarding the third false claim in the statement of Mr. Deedat where he distorted the meaning of the hadith, Al-Imām An-Nawawi رحمه الله cited the statement of Al-Qādi ‘lyād in his explanation of the hadith that the hadith is understood upon its apparent meaning by Ahl as-Sunnah opposing the distortion of the Batiniyyah (the secretive esoterics).
As for the Batiniyyah sect whose path Mr Deedat walked upon, Shaykh Salih Fawzān al-Fawzān said regarding them: “The Kufr (disbelief) of the Batiniyyah is the worse of Kufr; and whoever doubts their Kufr (disbelief) while he knows their methodology is a Kafir like them.”
As for the fourth false claim in the statement of Mr. Deedat, Imam Abu Ja’far Ahmed At-Tahawi stated the beliefs of the Ahl-as-Sunnah in his treatise ‘Aqeedah at-Tahaawiyyah that:
“We believe in the signs of the Hour such as the appearance of the Dajjal and the descent of ‘Isa ibn Maryam, peace be upon him, from heaven and we believe in the rising of the sun from where it sets and in the emergence of the Beast from the earth.”⁶
I asked our teacher, Shaykh Abu Zayād Nadeem regarding the ruling of the one who denies the rising of the sun from the West at the end time, and translated the Hadith to mean the rising of Islam in the West at the end time.
The Shaykh said: “He is a misguided one from the people of misguidance, and some scholars declared whoever denies the Major Signs of the hour to be a Kafir (a disbeliever). Allah’s refuge is sought.”
This short statement of Mr. Deedat is not up to 400 words, and we have discovered 4 different paths to Kufr (disbelief). What do you think about the Muslim who follows his cassettes?
What do you think about the self acclaimed scholars in Yorubaland who praise his methodology?
3. Ahmed Deedat uses the false claims of the apostate, Rashad Khalifa to call people to Islam.
Rashad Khalifa (1935-1990) is an apostate who declared himself to be a Messenger of Allah, he denied the Hadith, and removed verses from the Qur’an because they do not fit into his false numerology. He falsely claimed that the Quran is locked by the unique code “19” and Ahmed Deedat believed it and also said this in his lectures and also reproduced the theory in his books.
The Permanent Committee of Fatwa of Saudi Arabia was asked:
Ahmed Deedat said in his book “Al-Qur’an the Miracle of Miracles” that the Qur’an includes many references to the number 19 and its multiplications. He gave many examples and here are some of them:⁷
– The word “اسم” (name) is mentioned 19 times in the Qur’an.
– The word “الله” (Allah) is mentioned 2698 (19 x 142) times in the Qur’an.
– The word “الرحيم” (The Most Merciful) is mentioned 114 (19 x 6) times in the Qur’an.
– The letter “ن” (Nun) is mentioned 133 (19 x 7) times in Surah Al-Qalam.
He also made reference to the study conducted by Dr. Rashad Khalifah in his book “Al-Qur’an Taqdim Mar’y li-Mu’jizah”. Here are some examples of the points he raised:
– The first Qur’anic revelation is composed of 19 words which include 76 (19 x 4) letters.
– The first Surah (Qur’anic chapter) revealed in the Qur’an includes 19 Ayahs (Qur’anic verses) and 285 (19 x 15) letters, etc.
Please give us your Fatwa (legal opinion issued by a qualified Muslim scholar) in this regard.
Answer:
This study is among the fabricated falsities of a sect called Al-Batiniyyah Al-Baha’iyyah. It is based on glorifying the number 19. There is no doubt that this study is false, as it involves manipulating the Glorious Qur’an and distracting people from pondering its true meanings.
This malicious group holds many false beliefs such as some of its leaders claiming Prophethood. Its followers believe in Hulul (a Sufi term meaning indwelling) and Ittihad (a Sufi claim of union with Allah), deem Jihad (fighting in the Cause of Allah) to be unlawful and call for the unification of religions plus many other things.
So, it is the duty of Muslims to beware of falling into this evil group and of being affected by its ideas or books.
We ask Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) to save us from their plotting and to protect Muslims from their evils, for He is All-Powerful.
May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta’
Chairman – Imam Abdul-‘Aziz ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Baz ⁸
I say: This is another time that Mr. Deedat’s statement would lead to the Bātiniyyah Kufr Movement. We ask Allah for safety. This is the one whose Daʿwah methodology is being praised. Allaahul Musta’aan.
4. Ahmed Deedat elevates and praises the leaders of Kufr.
We have brought up how he promoted Rashad Khalifa The Apostate. Another leader of Kufr that Ahmed Deedat praised is Khomeini. Ahmed Deedat said:
And when he came in, when he walked in from an outer room you know the elite effect it had on everybody, the charisma.
You look at the man and without any thinking on your part, tears start rolling down your cheek. You just look at the man and you just!
I never saw a more handsome old man in all my life.
No picture! No video! Or TV can do justice to the man.
The handsomest old man I have ever seen in my life, was this man, Imam Khomeini.
Now, his name, you know there is something unique about his name.
Number one, he is called Imam Khomeini, …”
Khomeini (May Allah’s consecutive curses be upon him) said evil things about our mother, Aisha and the rest of the Sahabah. Scholars of Sunnah like Shaykh Al-Albani and Shaykh Muqbil declared Khomeini a Kaafir, but ignorance pushed the likes of Mr. Deedat to praise him. If a person is so ignorant to this level, is he befitting to talk about Islam at all, not to talk of giving Daʿwah? If a person as ignorant as Ahmed Deedat now gives Daʿwah, how destructive would it be if a person seen as a scholar of Sunnah praises such Daʿwah?
5. Ahmed Deedat taught his followers to copy the Christians in not forbidding the wrong.
Questioner: I’d like to ask you a question about the sects we have divided, we Muslims, and we are called for example; Ahl Hadith, Shi’ah and Sunnis. What would you advise a new Muslim to join?
I mean, what I believe (unclear).
The beliefs of Shi’a and Sunnis and Ahl Hadith and other people who are supposed to be Muslims are a bit different. So what would you suggest a new Muslim to go into?
Deedat: Right, I would tell you.
If you are a Shi’a my sister, you convert a person to Shi’ism, if you are a Sunni you convert him to Sunnisim.
You see, I happen to be a Sunni Borah (He claims, by sect, he is Sunni but by tribe he is a Borih).
You see the Borih community, the Isma’ili Khojas, they are Shi’ahs.
I come from the same part of the country (as the Shi’ahs), with similar names, the same language and I’m a Sunni.
Now, I do not take credit for being a Sunni and I do not disparage the other guy because he is a Shi’ah.
Simply because the people who reached my people were Sunnis, whatever they taught and we accepted it.
Their forefathers (of the Shi’ahs in his community) they were approached by people who had some Shi’ah ideas, they made them into Shi’ahs. So now, we are not gonna fight.
See, the Christians are not fighting, there are a different thousand sects and denominations, but when they come to steal your children, they are not talking about this.
They don’t say look “Now I’m making you into a Christian but you mustn’t become a Jehovah witness”, “I’m making you a Christian but you mustn’t become a Roman Catholic”.
He talks nothing of the kind.
Whatever church he belongs to, he just only teaches you that.
So you follows his example, the Christian’s example, you won’t go wrong! [End of Quote]
Mr. Deedat in the above statement explained his Daʿwah methodology. He claims not to take pride in being a Sunni (even though it is very clear that he is not one) and doesn’t disparage the deviant sect of the Shi’ah. So, he copied the Christians who do not warn against innovated sects and wrong actions and he as well taught that to his followers.
What Islam is Mr Deedat calling people to if he doesn’t warn against another pathway to Hell (Shi’ism)?
Is the Daʿwah just to leave Christianity or to worship Allah only? What is the benefit if a person leaves off calling upon Maryam and goes on to call upon Husayn? Is it not the same Shirk?!
What caller is Mr. Deedat if he imitates the accursed way of the Christians who do not forbid what is wrong?
Allah said:
“Those among the Children of Israel who disbelieved were cursed by the tongue of Dawud (David) and ‘lesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary). That was because they disobeyed (Allah and the Messengers) and were ever transgressing beyond bounds. They used not to forbid one another from the Munkar (wrong, evil-doing, sins, polytheism, disbelief, etc.) which they committed. Vile indeed was what they used to do.” (Maidah: 78,79)
6. Ahmed Deedat claims that the “Big Bang” theory is found within the Qur’an.
From Ahmed Deedat’s book: Al-Quran: The Miracle of Miracles.
The Big Bang Theory is a false theory of the atheists and it is connected to the Darwinian Theory of Evolution that led to the conclusion by many that there is no creator ⁸ and Ahmed Deedat claimed in his books and a lecture (I only saw it in a lecture, probably he said it in many other lectures) that this false theory was mentioned in the Qur’an. This is a great crime, speaking regarding Allah without evidence.
Allah said:
“Say (O Muhammad ﷺ) But the things that my Lord has indeed forbidden are Al-Fawahish (great evil sins and every kind of unlawful sexual intercourse) whether committed openly or secretly, sins (of all kinds), unrighteous oppression, joining partners (in worship) with Allâh for which He has given no authority, and saying things about Allâh of which you have no knowledge.” [A’raf: 33]
What is more saddening is the fact that this false concept of Big Bang theory is directly connected to atheism, and it is used to direct people to atheism. How will a person claim to call people to Allah but direct people back to atheism by way of ignorance?
Do we even consider that many Muslims listen to Mr. Deedat? What happens to the belief of a Muslim who consumes all of these from him?
So, do we say because we want some Christians to accept our religion, we need to destroy the beliefs of those who are basically Muslims? At the end, the existing Muslims have their beliefs destroyed while the Christians you claim to convert only migrate from a part of Jahannam to the other. Allah’s aid is sought!
7. Ahmed Deedat says “Allah is Everywhere”.
Shaykh Rabee’ bn Hādī ‘Umayr Al-Madkhali narrated:
“There was a debate between a Christian priest and Deedat, the priest said: Allah is above the heaven. Deedat said: (Allah) is everywhere. This is misguidance. Allah’s refuge is sought. This destroyed his debate, and destroyed his methodology and made the Christian overcome him.” [‘Awn al-Bāry 2/386]
Shaykh Salih al-Fawzaan was asked:
What is the ruling of the statement: Allah is everywhere?
Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan: “This is Kufr (disbelief). And Allah’s refuge is sought. This is Hululiyyah (Believing that Allah resides in everything)
Saying “Allah is Everywhere” is Hululiyyah. This is disbelief in Allah عز وجل . Allah جلا وعلا is above His slaves.
“And He is the Irresistible, above His slaves.” [An’ām:18]
“Do you feel secure that He, Who is over the heaven (Allah), will not cause the earth to sink with you, then behold it shakes (as in an earthquake)?”
“Or do you feel secure that He, Who is over the heaven (Allah), will not send against you a violent whirlwind? Then you shall know how (terrible) has been My Warning?” [Mulk 16,17]
Allah جلا وعلا is above. Allah is above.
As for the one who says He is everywhere, this is Hululiyyah. This is Kufr. And Allah’s aid is sought.⁹
This is another door of Kufr that Ahmed Deedat is opening for his listeners due to ignorance, and Dr. Sharaf is praising the methodology of the one who gives Daʿwah with this level of ignorance. Allaahul Musta’aan.
8. Ahmed Deedat taught the Muslims that there’s nothing wrong in celebrating Mawlid An-Nabiyy and Wishing Christians “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year”.
Questioner: I want you to give me the evidence from the Quran and Sunnah. Jazakumullahu khairan.
Deedat: I hoped. I hoped. You’re great my Son. You see when I said that “Happy Christmas”, ” Happy New Year”, that doesn’t mean… What is Christmas?
Questioner: It’s pagan, it’s pagan festival.
Deedat: What is Christmas? What does Christmas mean? It means the birth of Christ.
Questioner: Yes, the birth of Christ.
Deedat: Birth of our Nabiyy, we celebrate. Don’t we?
Questioner: We don’t celebrate.
Deedat: Yes.
Questioner: We don’t.
Deedat: Maolud?
Questioner: No we don’t, that is Bid’ah. We don’t celebrate. Neither the Prophet Muhammad Sala Allahu Alayhi Wa Salam, in his life nor the companions has been celebrate this ehh
Deedat: There are millions of Muslims including myself, I don’t mind having a birthday celebration of the Prophet. You say bid’ah, I say okay my son. I don’t want to argue you. I don’t want to quarrel with you, I don’t want you to quarrel with me, You see I’m not here…
Questioner: But the Qur’ān and Sunnah will judge between us.
Deedat: Okay leave it to Allah. That judgement, leave it to Allah.
Questioner: No, how can we leave it to Allah? [End of the Video]
In some other interviews and lectures when Mr. Deedat talks about celebrating Christmas, he says he doesn’t celebrate Christmas because he sees that “Jesus wasn’t born on December 25” as the Christians claim. He does not say this on the basis that it is the festival of the disbelievers or that it is a celebration that has no evidence in the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger.
He does not know because he did not study the books of Tawheed and ʿAqeedah, how does the one who hasn’t gone through these fields of knowledge give Daʿwah? How is the Daʿwah of such a person praised by one who claims to be upon the Sunnah?
Mr. Ahmed Deedat got into all of this misguidance due to ignorance. This Mr. Ahmed Deedat, who is ignorant of the basis of his religion, memorised a lot more Biblical verses than most Christians. Allahul Mustaʿaan!
There is an important question that we need to ask those who praise the likes of Ahmed Deedat, if you praise the Daʿwah of Muslim Apologetics even though it is based on ignorance, why do you then warn against the Daʿwah of Jama’tu Tabligh?!
Allahul Mustaʿaan.
