Shaykh Muḥammad bn Ghālib al-Umarī:
The nature of man is that he loves Money. The one who hates and abhors money can’t be found.
However, (there’s) a difference between you possessing money and you being possessed by money i.e Money is the one that has a dominion over you and you are not the one who has a dominion over it. This is Fitnah (Tribulation).
And (there’s) a difference between money being in your hand and it being your heart. And (there’s) a difference between money being an aid for you in Obedience to Allāh جل وعلا or a reason for your backsliding and opposition to the Legislation and Religion of Allāh جل وعلا.
So therefore, this money, when it posseses the heart of man, then he loves it Hubban Jammā (with an Abundant Love). As Allāh says: “And you love wealth with much love” (al-Fajr:20)
i.e Abundantly and Strongly
Due to your extreme love for Money, you depart from your brothers (i.e you cut them off).
And due to your extreme love for Money, you disobey your parents.
And due to your extreme love for Money, prevent
az-Zakāh (to be given from your money) and you circumvent it (i.e it’s payment)
And due to your extreme love for Money, you abstain from obedience.
And due to your extreme love for Money, you harm your children and spouse.
And this is miserliness. And the greatest way man can be stingy is to be stingy to himself.
And due to that Allāh says: “And whosoever is saved from his own covetousness, such are they who will be the successful.” (al-Hashr:9)
